The faux fur coat is one investment you can make that will never go out of style. It has come a long way from it’s somewhat humble beginnings almost 100 years ago when it was seen as the cheaper alternative for women who could not afford real fur. Over the decades, fake furriers have made increasing leaps forward in perfecting ‘real looking’ fur and as attitudes changed towards the use of real fur with animal rights activists attacking the fur industry, it fast became a more ethical and attractive alternative to the real thing.
In an iconic 1994 campaign, PETA launched a series of advertising campaigns featuring supermodels such as Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford posing nude, while promoting the slogan “I’d rather be naked than wear fur.”
Over two decades later, while global sales of real fur are on the rise once more, faux fur has established a firm place in the fashion industry and is consistently reinventing itself with Teddy-bear-esque styles and brightly coloured faux furs making their way from the catwalk to the high-street for us all to enjoy.
Faux fur is such a tactile fabric, that not only looks luxurious when wearing, but keeps you incredibly warm and feels super soft and cuddly at the same time. I have a slight obsession with it myself and love when I can pull mine out for the chillier months! My children also love me wearing my coats because they say it’s like cuddling a giant teddy bear, so what more excuse do I need to keep investing in them? 🙂
Below are my favourite faux furs on the high street right now:
