Having trawled the rails of various stores stocking maternity bras I was disappointed to see such a lack of imagination that had been put into them. Most were plain and functional in white or black and had all the sex appeal of a sports bra. Surely, just because women chose to breastfeed their babies didn’t mean they had to kiss goodbye to beautiful underwear for the duration? Where was the fun in that?!
I decided to try a different route and so took to the internet to see if I could find some beautiful nursing lingerie that took the frump out of feeding….
It was then that I came across the rather amusingly (and memorably) entitled BoobieMilk website that stocked gorgeous Hotmilk nursing bras, along with a good range of other labels and offered a fantastic service to boob, I mean boot!
BoobieMilk is a Mummy run business providing in-home nursing bra fittings in and around Kent. Nursing bras and accessories are also available for purchase at www.boobiemilk.co.uk to be delivered to the whole of the UK.
Having given her my size, Karen offered to come to my home to give me a free fitting on a selection of beautiful bras. It was such a relief to be able to go through them in the comfort of my own living room rather than having to march around town on a fruitless search for pretty but practical lingerie (not ideal when you’re eight months pregnant)!
The bra I opted for was a beautiful champagne colour (and shown above), with pretty lace full cup and wire-free with A-frame support (available in B-H cup sizes). It had six back eye settings meaning you could adjust it to fit during pregnancy and nursing and the cotton lining felt lovely and soft against my skin. For extra glamour it has a satin bow detail with a small diamante drop centre making it feel incredibly luxurious.
I also ended up buying a couple of unbelievably comfortable Emma-Jane bras for night time feeding. Okay, these bras are not going to win any ‘Sexiest Bra of the Year’ awards but in terms of being practical and offering excellent support and comfort for nursing and sleeping in, these are a hands down winner and incredibly affordable at only £10.00 each!
Karen also brought with her a range of great Hotmilk nursing vests. As they offer the same support and functionality of a bra they can be worn either under a cardigan or non-nursing top during the day or as an alternative to a bra and nightie at night time. The one I chose was super flattering as was fitted around the bust but flowed loosely over the bump area so perfect as a maternity top or to hide the inevitable post pregnant tummy while you work on getting your figure back!
If you live within an hour of Sevenoaks, Kent, you can book an appointment with Karen to travel to your home which I highly recommend! This is a unique service that I didn’t know was available until now and although you can just buy online, there is nothing that beats actually seeing the bras up close and getting to try them on first if you can.
This is what Karen from BoobieMilk has to say:
“Bringing a new life into this world can be exhausting and an emotional time. You may also be on bed rest, or just not want to take the baby outside yet. An in-home nursing bra fitting can be the perfect answer. You can arrange for me to come to your house at a pre-arranged time to fit your bras in the comfort of your home. You can take your time to try on different styles without the pressures of being in a store, and I can even make you a cup of tea while you nurse your newborn. If you decide for any reason that the bra you have chosen is not the one for you, I can come right back to deliver the right one.”
I will definitely be using her service again in future and hooray for Hotmilk – thanks for giving women that breastfeed the chance to feel fabulous at the same time!
