Last year, I threw away a pair of much loved denim skinny jeans as they had by the looks of them served their time. The colour had faded and the knees had finally worn through and were now ripped and ‘tatty’. They were quickly replaced by a shiny new pair, complete with knees in tact and I walked out the store happy. It was a mere month or so later after I had ditched said jeans that I was aware that I may have been a little hasty in discarding them as realised that actually ripped jeans were totally in fashion and were now everywhere! Perhaps they have been everywhere for a while and I just hadn’t noticed until then but while the ripped/distressed jeans look perhaps never went completely out of fashion, it has without doubt, become more mainstream in the last couple of years.
Ripped jeans, whilst previously associated with poverty rather than fashion, were first reinvented in the 1960’s and 70’s with bands such as The Ramones wearing them, making them popular with the rebellious 70’s child in the era of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. However, it wasn’t until the early 1990’s that they became popular with mainstream celebrities such as Winona Rider and Julia Roberts who flaunted theirs with doc marten boots and t-shirts.
Fast forward twenty years and with celebrities and models leading the way with this current style trend, ripped jeans have been given a glamorous twist that is anything but grunge. Slashed jeans (particularly at the knee) whether it be skinny, boyfriend or cropped, are incredibly versatile and can be dressed down with a casual top and flats during the day or teamed with stiletto heels, a tailored jacket and statement jewellery, for the ultimate stylish night time look, with some added rock chick chic thrown in….
After much trying on in a variety of stores, I found what has quickly become my favourite pair of jeans in Zara. The pale blue mid rise skinny felt perfect for my frame although they have a variety of styles and colours in store so worth checking out their collection here: Zara Damaged Jeans
I, for one, will definitely be investing further in this hot current trend as I don’t see it going away anytime soon but if you don’t want to spend your hard earned cash on a ready made pair, you could always get creative on a pair of jeans you already have, if you’re feeling brave!

Love this post Sharron…although I must say that I think it was the early ’80s not ’70s that they were there for the rebel children…I was one of them but my Mother refused to let me wear them until (lucky for me) a dear friend of mine decided she had grown out of hers and I inherited them – my favourite pair of jeans for years!!!
Have a wonderful week – I am posting about the secret of the Jumpsuit tomorrow so stay tuned – smile.

Great ideas. While I love them on you, I don’t think they flatter everyone. If you happen to be a little larger in the thigh they may draw attention to this. Not you! You wear them so well. Gorgeous girl X

Thanks for your ideas Siobhan. The good news is there are lots of different types of ripped jeans out there to suit women of all shapes and sizes. For curvier girls perhaps a darker shade of denim would suite with the rips limited to the knee rather than the thigh. Wearing them with heels will also elongate your legs which helps to give you a more flattering look! x
